The state of Pará, located in the northern region of Brazil, has a shortage of Masters courses that can meet the demand for qualified professionals to work in public and private higher education organizations. Masters Courses in the Naval area or waterway transport are only offered in Southeastern Brazil, 3000 km from the northern region, which makes it very expensive for the qualification of professionals from the north of Brazil.

Thus, the Master's course in Naval Engineering of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) meets the regional needs, regarding the qualification of professors and professionals from different areas, with a view to the new demands of the job market each time more selective.

The agreement between the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) and the University of Southampton - UK also establishes the initial conditions for the future development of research projects between the institutions, expanding the scope of research in the North. At the same time, it is in line with the current policy of consolidating research activities in these regions and exchanging experiences with one of the most prestigious universities in the world in the field of Naval Engineering.

This course is being demanded not only by educational institutions located in the north and northeast of Brazil, but also by institutions located in the South and Central Americas, since one of the focuses of the course is to develop research that contributes to growth and improves quality of river transportation in the Amazon region. Educational institutions of the Navy and Federal Government agencies also demanded the implementation of the Master's course at the Federal University of Pará.

The creation of a Master's degree in Naval Engineering at the Federal University of Pará is a great step towards developing and consolidating research in the north of the country, and the model proposed by the Master's degree with the support of the University of Southampton in England will enable the graduating students to continue their studies at the Doctoral level at the University of Southampton in England.
